“The Force is Strong with This One…”

Advertisements for a range of items today are proving to be extremely well-written and almost as entertaining as the television shows they interrupt. This ad for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is no exception. It is, quite honestly, one of the best ads this author has seen in a long time:

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order – “Become a Jedi”

One of the best things about this advertisement, in this writer’s opinion, is the sense of innocence. The construction workers who play with the girl do so with the full knowledge that they look silly to anyone watching. But in consideration of the girl’s imagination, they join with her in her game enthusiastically. Who cares if a passerby snickers at their performance? The boss’ daughter is enjoying herself. Making a child happy has its own rewards.

The method used by the film makers to remind her father of this fact is also heartwarming. The only thing that would have made it better would be for the girl’s dad to join in the fun by helping her fight the Inquisitors. Unfortunately, perhaps in order to make the ad align with the game’s story, he simply hands her the lightsaber and watches from the shadows.

Despite this lack, however, the advertisement is a good piece for future authors to reference when writing about children and their parents. The ad has little dialogue, but says much. This is not a trick limited to filmography; prose writers can employ it just as well, if not better.

Give it a try, future authors, and see what happens. You might be surprised at how well the technique works out. 😉

*Though I cannot recommend Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order due to the fact that I haven’t played it, there are other games from the franchise which you might enjoy. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic may not have the graphics that Order does, but the story is fantastic.
